Burnetts Solicitors LLP, which has offices in Cumbria and Newcastle, has announced that Corporate Partner Michael Walby will become the new Head of Department of the Corporate team.
The current Head Vaughan Jones is stepping down from the role after a highly successful tenure, having led the team through transactions with an aggregate value approaching £200m during 2021.
Michael has been with Burnetts since 2015 and provides a full range of Corporate advice to businesses, specialising in M&A transactions. He is ranked as a “Leading Individual” in Legal 500, the only Cumbria-based Corporate lawyer to receive this accolade, and Chambers & Partners described him as having “outstanding commercial and legal acumen”.
Michael brings a fresh perspective to the role, with ambitions to build on the Corporate team’s reputation as lawyers of choice in Cumbria and Newcastle, having overseen many recent strategic transactions in these regions and having established himself as a trusted adviser to some of Cumbria and Newcastle’s largest companies, as well as to SMEs and leading entrepreneurs.
The role transition comes after a sustained period of success for the Corporate department.
Vaughan Jones said: “Michael is held in high regard right across the professional community and is the perfect person to lead the Corporate team as it embarks on its next chapter. His drive and commitment will undoubtedly make a real success of the team and see it continue with its growth strategy across Cumbria and the North East”.
Michael said: “I am thrilled to be taking over from Vaughan as Head of Corporate, during what I intend to be an exciting period of growth and expansion, building on the team’s hard work over the last few years. The majority of our work is generated from recommendations, which demonstrates the high regard that our clients and business contacts have for us. We are committed to developing our team, and are currently recruiting for new corporate lawyers to assist with our expansion plans. We are one of the only law firms in Cumbria that can offer City-level corporate work combined with a good work-life balance and employee wellbeing. I am excited to see what the future holds – watch this space!”
